PLANTING:
About Thyme gardening plants small town gardens, new build housing, country gardens and large estates. Our schemes always seek to accept and exploit the conditions on site and create a scheme that enhances the house and its surroundings. About Thyme Gardening undertakes all types of planting schemes including large and specimen tree planting, the supply and planting of formal or countryside hedges, mass bulb planting and flower beds, both formal and naturalistic.
BORDERS
About Thyme Gardening has experience growing and planting borders with particular emphasis on creating self-sustaining plant communities that give interest throughout the year. Trees and shrubs create and create structure and height to the garden, whilst perennials provide the main blocks of colour and interesting foliage shapes. Ornamental grasses are also widely used giving movement and a naturalistic softness.
In all our planting schemes, plants are chosen to compliment and accentuate each other so that colours enhance each other. Whether the brief is a fiery hot scheme of red and yellow or a more subtle pastel design of pinks, blues and lavender, We have the experience and hundreds of plants to choose from to fill the beds with colour and life.
Harmonious planting is not just about colour though. Plants look best when they are accompanied by suitable neighbouring species, horticulturally and visually. Thus About Thyme Gardening creates schemes that seek to emulate natural plant communities and relationships. Not only are the plants easier to maintain as they have the same needs and requirements, but the planting has a unity, which helps the garden flow, and hang together.
Subject to agreement with the client, About Thyme Gardening also returns in the autumn to plant a wide range of sympathetic bulbs amongst the new plantings to compliment the chosen colour scheme and conditions. Selecting the right plants for the site and planting them in the right places keeps maintenance to a minimum, so that an established bed needs less maintenance time than an equivalent area of grass.
BULBS
Bulbs form an essential part of any garden but are often under utilized and misplaced. Careful selection and planting can extend the flowering of borders throughout the year and add seasonal splashes of colour under trees and shrubs and in lawn and meadows. If the right species and varieties are chosen, extensive carpets of self-sown seedlings create dramatic carpets of colour mirroring the displays that occur in British woodlands in spring.
About Thyme gardening offers an autumn bulb planting service where I return to gardens and plant tens, hundreds or thousands of bulbs between the herbaceous plantings. Daffodils, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus, Snowdrops, Camassias, Hyacinths, Eremurus and Cyclamen extend the season of colour from autumn through to mid summer. The exact varieties are chosen so that their colours and forms compliment the existing planting and enhance the existing colour scheme.
Naturalising bulbs such as daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops is another service offered. Orchards, meadows and woods all offer potential to create dramatic effects with massed bulbs spreading and increasing each year. Smaller schemes around trees, in orchards and along verges also offer an easy to maintain and dramatic seasonal display.
HEDGES
About Thyme Gardening can supply and plant all types, sizes and amounts of hedges, I also ensure they are trimmed and shaped.
The specialist nurseries I use can supply all sizes of yew hedging at competitive prices from 60cm pot grown plants to 175/200cm root balled specimens. Prices can fluctuate. Hedging is still a seasonal task as the range and prices in winter are much better than what is available in spring and summer.
Beech, hornbeam, laurel, Portuguese laurel, holly, box, yew and Photinia are also commonly supplied and used in a vast array of sizes and forms.
If you are planning a hedge or ready to have a hedge planted or would like it to be expertly trimmed or even be shaped by topiary, please contact us to discuss your requirements and budget.

TREES
Trees are a fundamental part of the landscape and have a role to play in all but the smallest gardens. Whether screening buildings and roads, producing flowers, fruits or autumn colour or providing dappled shade, there is a tree for every site.
About Thyme Gardening uses trees extensively in its gardens to give height and structure to borders and frame views and vistas. Japanese maples, strawberry trees and unusual magnolias will fit in small gardens while the selection of trees for larger gardens is vast. Our extensive knowledge of trees and their growth habits ensures that the correct tree is chosen for the garden. Pleached trees can give a beautiful structure and privacy to a garden.
I also carry out expert pruning to lift trees, as shown below, or to do seasonal pruning for example, apple trees in the dormant season, identifying problems such as disease or damage and advise on this and rectify if possible.. I do not carry out major tree surgery but can recommend someone for this specialised work.
